Poor Spidey by MauricioAbril Poor Spidey by MauricioAbril
I suppose this is what happens when you cross fan art with social commentary. I came up with the idea for this gag illustration after watching “The Amazing Spiderman 2″ on opening weekend, but only just now got around to finishing it. It pretty much summarizes how I felt about the new franchise, the larger Marvel cinematic universe and the realities of binding contracts.

As always, behind-the-scenes and making-of blog posts will be found on my site at MauricioAbril.com

By this point, I think the problem with the Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four reboot franchises is that the source material feels small if left alone in their own worlds, and the Spider-Man franchise collapsed under its own weight when it was trying to copy Marvel's model by creating a movie universe. But again, the source material is not viable enough, and it felt like they were grasping at straws by inducing numerous plotlines in one movie and the rumored "Aunt May" spin-off. Marvel, however, through ten movies, is able to build a universe that is big and grand enough to support even the most fantastic elements in each property's canon. Marvel has established that aliens and cosmic beings exist so maybe we can have a proper adaptation of the symbiote costume, Venom, and maybe Carnage. If the Fantastic Four right return to Marvel, a storyline featuring Galactus and the Silver Surfer, the Negative Zone, the Skrulls and Super-Skrull, and a Doctor Doom done right now that Marvel is establishing magic elements in the MCU.

The only thing said about this picture is poor Spidey!

Can you do another one similar to this but with the Fantastic Four instead? I really think that Fox is screwing them over yet again and I really have no confidence in the upcoming reboot that just spells disaster.

I don't feel too good about the new FF movie either. It just seems like they're trying to make things cool without really staying true to the nature of the character and stories. A lot of FF fans have mentioned to me that they'd love to see a version like this but I've got a huge list of "to do" pieces that we'll see if I ever get the time lol.

Yeah, the more that comes out of the Fantastic Four reboot, the more that real fans feel justified knowing that Fox just really doesn't get the Fantastic Four at all and plus, it looks like that they screwed up Doctor Doom yet again because his new look in the film just looks awful! I mean, you heard of all of the behind the scenes troubles going on with director Josh Trank and how he's already having a huge public mental breakdown over it, right? It got so bad that he's been fired from his Star Wars film because no way will LucasFilm/Disney will want someone like him on their movies!

Once when the film comes out and gets panned by both critics and audiences alike and then hear everyone complain over how Fantastic Four is awful and Fox's idea of having their own cinematic universe with X-Men and Fantastic Four not working anytime soon and wish for the Fantastic Four to come back home to Marvel, I think the huge demand to see fan art of them being with Marvel again will be there.

Hmm, interesting, I had not heard all that. I did read somewhere online that apparently this FF4 movie was trying to reuse the Chronicle 2 script so a lot of things feel super forced. It's too bad because I really loved Chronicle and was hoping the director would continue to do great stories. Oh, well.

If that is true that Josh Trank is reusing elements from Chronicle and forcing it on Fantastic Four, then I guess it would be accurate to say that this is pretty much FFINO (Fantastic Four In Name Only).

Anyways, unlike with X-Men, Fox has already struck out with Fantastic Four twice already and if they fail again, that's when people would say, enough is enough, Fox should just give them back to Marvel because would they really want this version of Fantastic Four tainting their X-Men films? They tried hard enough to recover from X-Men 3 and the first Wolverine movie and they don't need anymore major setbacks.

Yeah, it's really too bad. After this film does poorly (and that's just my prediction), it seems like I agree with your sentiment - FF will become a tainted property for a while that no one's going to want to touch. There's always hope if you consider what Netflix did with Daredevil but that was like 10 years later so there needs to be some time between this new movie and the next reboot (if there is one).

If the Fantastic Four reboot flops, then I would think Fox should just give it up already and just sell it back to Marvel/Disney because what is the point of keeping a property that is losing you money? Also, it seems that Fox really wants to force an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover on everyone if this piece of crap makes decent money but if the reviews and box office don't live up to expectations, then they may cancel those plans because those involved have been backtracking in regards of whether or not Fox can legally do this crossover because signs are that they don't. Also, X-Men have recovered from two bad films, they don't a want a bad Fantastic Four destroy that momentum!

I wouldn't think Netflix would do Fantastic Four because they would be way too expensive for them and plus, Fantastic Four has a lot of major characters that would benefit Marvel/Disney a whole lot like Doctor Doom, Silver Surfer, Galactus, and even Kang the Conqueror and if I were Marvel/Disney, I would so need to get the Fantastic Four once when Phase 4 comes around and having Fantastic Four back home in time for Phase 4 would oddly enough, be very poetically fitting.

I happened to LOVE the last two Spider-Man films, I felt like they did an excellent job of showing the audience that the villains are people too and humanity isn't black and white but shades of grey.

I'd rather have them put Garfield's Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead of starting from scratch. What's the point in rebooting a franchise only to rush in another one?

The unfortunate truth I've learned working in the entertainment industry is that creative decisions are almost always at the mercy of business decisions, and business decisions don't always make sense :(
